Project Introduction and Architectural Design Proposal

　　World Expo Museum is one of the key cultural projects of Shanghai “12th Five-year Plan”. Located in Puxi side of the original Expo 2010 site, it is a good example of Expo legacy utilization. The project is planned to cover a land area of about 4 hectares, with a construction area of around 46,550 square meters. The construction started in late 2013 and the museum plans to be officially opened on May 1st, 2016.

| Bidding Overview |

　　Initially launched in February 2012, the international bidding for architectural design of the new project of the World Expo Museum had attracted enthusiastic attention from construction industry at home and from abroad. Nine companies from China, France, UK and Japan had participated in the bidding. After two rounds of expert review, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute won the bidding with its design proposal. The proposal, with the theme of “City in Celebration”, reflected the joyful city life and a better vision of the future.

| Design Concept |

　　World Expo Museum is a new type public museum inside city. With a future-oriented attribute, it will present contents of multiple dimensions that integrate history and future together, display in a variety of ways that focus on interaction and personal experience, and provide multi-level public services to share community activity and academic exchange. combine tracing history and looking ahead with multi-dimensional displaying contents, focusing on interactive participation and in-depth experience in a variety of showcasing ways, and sharing urban activities and academic exchanges with multi-level public services. It will emphasize the integration of the Museum and Shanghai’s city life and international cultural exchanges, focusing on creating the three public properties of culture, citizen and platform.WEM puts emphasis on combination of the museum with local urban life and international cultural exchange, and preferentially features its nature as public cultural institution, civil space and exchange platform.

　　To this end, the architectural design of the World Expo Museum on one hand intended to reflect countless wonderful and memorable fragments in the more than 160 years history of Expos, which made the Museum an “era container” to preserve these wonderful memories. On the other hand, it strived to provide a space where citizens could participate in and carry out a variety of colorful cultural activities, which made the Museum the “city’s living room” for people to explore, experience, create and share the joy of life.

| Architectural Form |

　　In line with characteristics of the surrounding environment and sound inner layout, the architectural form of the World Expo Museum uses the image superimposition of “History Valley”, which symbolizes the history, meditation and eternity, and “Celebration Cloud”, which represents the future, openness and moment, to interpret its theme.

　　The overall construction is a rectangular block, with a high lobby named “Celebration Cloud” in the central part of the building, which is the center to gather population and attract stream of people in the area. Inside the rectangular block, a green pavilion street serves as the main line, evoking similar sympathy of visitors when their visited Expos.

　　The fully open pavilion street provides the public with a leisure place with beautiful scenery and excellent environment, which facilitates involvement of the visitors, and reflects the Expo concept of “comprehension, communication, congregation and cooperation”.

| Layout and Flow Lines |

　　The main structure of the World Expo Museum consists of five floors above ground and one under ground, with administration and research zone, public exhibition zone and comprehensive service zone sequentially arranged from north to south.

The administration and research zone in the north section mainly consists of warehouse, Documentation & Research Center and administrative area.
The public exhibition zone in the middle section contains permanent exhibition area and temporary exhibition area.
The comprehensive service zone in the south section along the river:
　-Has a ticketing hall, youngsters’ activity center and auditoriums on the first floor;
　-On the second floor are dining area and classrooms;
　-On the third floor are mainly VIP reception rooms, with a roof garden above it.
Interactive touring flow lines: tourists may enter the courtyard in the Museum via the major steps at the entrance of the east plaza, feeling the historical memories of Expos from changes of the outside shape and building materials of the exhibition hall while stepping up floor by floor and finally arriving at the sightseeing deck on the top floor.
