Established to commemorateHorticultural Expo 1990 in Osaka, the Expo ’90 Foundation is responsible for the management of commemorative funds and the promotion of activities that develop the theme of the Expo –"The Harmonious Coexistence of Nature and Mankind."

The Expo ’90 Foundation selected Dr. Berque, Director of studies at the EHESS (école des Hautes études en Sciences Sociales) in Paris, for his research and suggestions on the relationship between humankind and nature.

Inspired by the ‘fudo’ concept of Earth, Dr. Berque developed a new academic discipline, mésologie, and proposed a new theory reconsidering the relationship between nature and people, stressing the essential elements of Earth as resources, restrictions, risks and amenities.
