Visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai’s newest country pavilion will complete a fascinating ‘curriculum’ that fuses bold ideas with state-of-the-art solutions

Germany is set to implement cutting-edge technology at its Expo 2020 Dubai pavilion to leave visitors absorbed and educated in equal measure.

The newly announced ‘Campus Germany’ concept highlights the nation’s ongoing status as a sustainability pioneer, while also underlining the importance of international collaboration.

The partially solar-powered structure in Expo’s Sustainability District will adhere to the principles of Energiewende, Germany’s ambitious framework to switch to clean energy sources.

Each visitor will be equipped with IAMU, a state-of-the-art intelligent assistance system set to be showcased to the world for the first time at Expo 2020. Connected devices will serve as invisible companions, providing information through each stage of the campus journey from ‘enrolment’ to ‘graduation’.

A unique feature of the Campus Germany experience is the pavilion’s Welcome Hall, which will contain a pit of 155,000 black, red and gold balls (the colours of the German flag). Visitors simply have to select a ball and place it under a scanner to uncover its sustainability-related message.

Three themed areas will further illuminate the pavilion’s key ideas. The Energy Lab will use striking visuals to illustrate forward-thinking energy supply solutions, the Future City Lab will present the city of tomorrow and the Biodiversity Lab will explore the wonder of nature and innovations in the field of bionics.

The Campus Germany experience will finish with a collective task for visitors that will highlight the importance of collaboration to achieve an end goal, echoing Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

Anyone feeling hungry during the journey can sample German cuisine at the pavilion’s three-storey restaurant, while a performance stage will provide cultural entertainment. A busy schedule of congresses and business events, as well as a conference room and VIP area, will help to capture the interest of MICE delegates.

Dietmar Schmitz, Commissioner General of the German Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, said:“As two issues high on the regional and global agenda, education and sustainability were important focuses for us when designing Campus Germany for Expo 2020 Dubai.

“Our pavilion concept has been designed to seamlessly combine exhibition and architecture, with a storyline that will grasp visitors’ interest and hold it from start to finish, inviting them to engage with the content and be actively involved in the experience.”
