As part of Expo 2020 Dubai’s first overseas World Majlis session, global thought leaders gathered in New York to explore how technology can help humanity to create opportunity for all

How can the power of innovation and the human spirit enable more people to create their own future? This was the question on everyone’s lips as global thought leaders gathered in New York City for Expo 2020 Dubai’s first international World Majlis session.

Based on the Emirati tradition of the majlis, which enables meaningful exchanges between people of all cultures and backgrounds, Expo 2020’s World Majlis series brings together change-makers and aspiring leaders from around the globe to create conversations that matter.

The latest World Majlis session, which coincided with the United Nations General Assembly, was based on the theme of ‘8 billion possibilities’, as the global population edges towards this milestone number by 2030.

The discussion focused on how technology can help us to provide opportunity for all, how we can collectively address obstacles to opportunity, and how timeless values can help us to find meaning in our own lives.

Moderated by Her Excellency Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, participants included Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau; Kim Campbell, former prime minister of Canada; and Chris Anderson, curator of TED Talks.

Many more World Majlis sessions will take place throughout the journey to 2020 and during the six months of the event, both in the UAE and abroad.
