1st Auction Biennale

The theme of this Biennale was “Why Not!” The Curator thought this meant “Let it happen by starting from self and nothing is impossible.” The Biennale was a biennial exhibition with auction platform. It aimed to present arts and works in the past, present and future with specially designed circulation channels and auction types. The whole process of works exhibiting and price fixing was totally transparent both from online and the auction site.

The concept of the curator was that auction bidding, rather than payment, made more sense in showing attitude. Live auction was merely one of the “works” of the Biennale. With music band and avant-garde performances, the dimly-lit auction site might feel a little bit “wild”. Some works auctioned were only available for one piece and others may not be created until the auction hammer beats. Buyers could find a strong sense of participation as the exhibition aiming to enhance the interaction between the artworks and buyers.

Via Temporary Exhibition Hall leasing, the WEM successfully introduced the Hosane Auction Biennale and accumulated abundant experience for similar temporary exhibitions. This Biennale also served as a warm-up and testing event for the temporary exhibitions in the future.
