The workshop was specially organized for the upcoming “World Expo Museum Logo Solicitation” in mid-May, which was aimed at selecting the logo in line with the WEM’s positioning and requirements and promoting its tenet of “Source of Innovation, Window to the World”. By choosing Donghua as the venue for this very first workshop, the WEM hopes to attract more design ideas from the youths, especially the future design talents from the University. With their boundless creativity, these future design stars could gain an in-depth understanding of the concept of “Source of Innovation, Window to the World” and thoroughly express the tenet in their designs thereafter.

The workshop was begun at 9:30 a.m. with guest introduction by Professor Wu Liang, Deputy Director of Fashion and Visual Communications Design. Mr. Chen Tao, Creative Director of NOVA BRAND was invited to give a keynote speech on “Brand and Vision”. Mr. Chen shared his personal experiences in design studies and practices in France to shed light on the design concepts in Europe. His speech was a real eye-opener and encouragement for the students. Then Mr. Sun Wei, Co-founder and Community Director of Visual China made a detailed introduction of the WEM and the logo solicitation information with an elaboration on the tenet of "Source of Innovation, Window to the World”.

Some big names in the design circle of Shanghai were also invited and had a very interesting dialogue at the workshop. The dialogue, centered on the logo design, was hosted by Mr. Li Haitao (Creative Director of IDSEA BRAND) with panelists including Chen Tao, Yu Huiqing (Creative Director of Shanghai Snap Design Studio), and Chen Yunfei (Creative Director of Chen Yunfei Design Firm). By showcasing and analyzing a number of unique museum logos, the four guests had a quite heated discussion around topics including “current trends in the design of visual recognition for public spaces”, “the differences between museum logo design and other industrial logo”, and “how to graphically manifest the cultural property and creative ideas in logo design?”, etc.

The exciting dialogue session also provoked the thoughts of the students. Many of them raised questions and received answers from the four designers who encouraged students to learn from famous designers both home and abroad, to gain extensive knowledge of design philosophy and to understand the WEM’s cultural background in an in-depth manner so as to create their unique logo design works by combining the cutting-edge design techniques and their own ideas.

Co-built by the BIE and the Shanghai Municipality, the WEM is the BIE’s only authorized museum and documentation center. Meanwhile, it is also the very first internationalized museum in China. As an international platform for creativity, the WEM invites designers from the globe to share inspirations and creativities and show wisdom and talents to the world.
