October 31 is the "World Cities Day". It is the only international day proposed by the Chinese government to the United Nations and also the first international day of the United Nations to focus on the city, following the theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai:"Better City, Better Life".

2018 World Cities Day celebration in China was held in Xuzhou on October 31. The theme this year is:"Ecological City, Green Development."

Cross City World Tour is a comprehensive competition that requires teamwork and collective wisdom. It is a journey to discover and experience urban culture. As the 2018 World Citiers Day celebration, this competition had attracted 200 participants who passed through the Best Practices Area of Expo 2010 Shanghai site, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, Fuxing Park, WEM and other landmarks of Shanghai. Through the challenge, the participants felt Shanghai's history, its pulse and its future, paying tribute to the great people who have made the city amazing.

Shanghai is a culture-intensive metropolis full of modernity and traditional Chinese elements. Eastern and Western cultures blend here and the Communist Party of China was born here, too. This competition allowed participants to understand the cultural heritage of Shanghai and feel the unique charm of the integration of old and new.

To go to different mission points, in addition to walking, participants could only take public transport, including subway.

  Quiz

During the competition, the participants could play their best sport and rack their brain in a quiz as well. They could also experience life in the city and feel the pulse of the city through the competition. The task setting is closely linked to the hot spots of Shanghai, enabling the participants to understand and think about the city under their feet.

Taking photos with tourists in the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

A big feature of this competition is that, in addition to completing the specified challenge tasks, each participant needed to take group photos with at least five passers-by. This is a wise way to eliminate the distance between people, increase people-to-people communication and promote harmonious social development. This is also a goal of the World Cities Day.

2018 Cross City World Tour was co-organized by Shanghai World Cities Day Coordination Center and WEM, and it was planned by PICO SPORTS. Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee Office, Shanghai Municipal People's Government Information Office, Shanghai Municipal Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation Committee, and Shanghai Housing and Urban and Rural Construction Management Committee also worked behind them as the guiding units. Unlike traditional running competitions, the event was an occasion for both self-challenge and networking; it is also an opportunity to showcase the city's cultural heritage and achievements.
